 Cortes Island
Cortes Island with its many lakes, gorges, protected harbours and sandy beaches is located at the northern end of Georgia Strait. It is tucked between mainland British Columbia and Vancouver Island and can be accessed by ferry from Quadra Island. This charming island is known for its world famous oysters, clean protected waters, and large park lands, while the east side is the gateway to Desolation Sound, a famous boating, diving and sailing paradise. One of the most endearing features of Cortes are the island residents. These people are independent spirits who are self-reliant and have a keen interest in preserving the natural beauty of their island.

The island was named in 1792 after Hernando Cortez the intrepid Spanish conquistador. The Klahoose people, part of the Coast Salish, were Cortes' first inhabitants, with traditional territory that ranges through Desolation Sound to Toba Inlet. Squirrel Cove is the present home village of the Klahoose first nations. They have an active community hall and their generous and openhearted nature is felt within the Cortes community.

Few places on earth offer such natural beauty, strong community and a chance to take part in such a wide variety of recreational activities. Locals and visitors alike enjoy the many opportunities for boating, sailing, kayaking, swimming, horseback riding, trail walking, bird and wildlife watching afforded by this abundant island.

Although Cortes Islanders come from diverse backgrounds and have varied opinions on most subjects, most agree Cortes has been able to preserve a unique way of island life that is treasured by us all.
